The transition to menopause and post-menopausal years can be a time of many undesirable symptoms. Some of them are short lived and infrequent, but others of them can last years and make themselves known daily even.
There's many ways to support the body through this totally natural and normal time of transition:
· from diet and exercise
· to sleep and stress management
· not forgetting HRT and the love and compassion of friends and family.
There's also a wealth of excellent supplements on the market to help with certain symptoms and there's many herbs too, which are known for their beneficial effects on hormonal balance and overall well-being.
I'm going to tell you a little about my top 3 favourite herbs which I use in clinic, which are associated with alleviating symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause: Vitex Agnus Castus (Chasteberry), Tribulus, and Isoflavones.
1. Vitex Agnus Castus (Chasteberry)
Vitex Agnus Castus, commonly known as Chasteberry, is a herb that has been traditionally used to support female reproductive health. This herb is believed to act on the pituitary gland, helping to regulate the production of hormones, particularly progesterone. By supporting a healthy hormonal balance, Chasteberry may help alleviate symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and irregular periods that often accompany menopause. It's anti inflammatory and can also really help with anxiety, water retention and bloating and sleep disturbances - which are all common low progesterone symptoms.
2. Tribulus
Tribulus is another herb that has gained recognition for its potential benefits in easing menopausal symptoms. Known for its adaptogenic properties, Tribulus may help the body adapt to stress and promote hormonal equilibrium. It is best known for improving symptoms of fatigue, low libido, helping to manage blood sugar and it is also anti inflammatory.
One study showed that taking Tribulus terrestris enhanced several measures of sexual function in women after just four weeks and led to improvements in desire, arousal, satisfaction, lubrication and pain. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24773615).
3. Isoflavones
Isoflavones are a group of compounds found in plants, particularly in soybeans and other legumes, known for their estrogen-like effects in the body. During menopause, when estrogen levels decline, isoflavones may offer a natural way to support hormonal balance.
Found in:
Flaxseed
Soybeans and soy foods e.g. tofu and tempeh
Some legumes
By binding to estrogen receptors, these plant-based compounds can help alleviate symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness and low mood or brain fog, which are common during this phase of life. Incorporating isoflavone-rich foods or supplements into the diet can provide a natural means of managing menopausal symptoms.
